Final course reflection

This semester has nearly ended and I feel grateful for being a part of the Creativity seminar class. I've learnt how creativity is not just about art, music, or fashion but it could be inspiration from simple objects, or the ability to think about tasks in different angles. From this class, I also found my own perspective towards creativity, and recognized my own style. Activities in class helped me to better understand what kind of person I am, or whether I like minimalism or complexity. I realized how I love nature and aesthetics, which I never noticed before. I learnt a lot of things as well as practiced good working habits this semester. A habit that I developed is that I tend to pay a lot of attention to large projects, and some days I spent several hours straight on developing ideas, designing, and creating. I develop this habit since creativity projects require time and effort. Also when I already have an idea, I usually get work done fast because I do not want to miss any i...

Manifesto

Link Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C7KARd8BXk Artist Statement:   Hi, I'm Flora. I’ve always thought of myself as a creative thinker, a designer, and I think everyone else does.    Each individual has different views on “Creativity”. People look at the issue from a creative angle, and are inspired by things around them. I personally approach “creativity” and see it as a fundamental tool in life that enhances the thinking ability of an individual or a community working together on an issue or field.    The main application of this subject is to help people to find solutions to difficult problems.    This definition is reflected by a piece of art that I made.      Exhibit Notes:    The piece that I made was a golden, sparkling cape. I named it “Glow”, just like how it looks from my eyes. Cape has been very familiar to all ranges of age and it is everywhere. It appears in heroes' cartoons, movies. Even in the...

Quotes from books

"The imagination network allows you to daydream or imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes" "The salience network let’s you identify when things you have buried deep in your brain are salient to the world around you" "Creativity almost never comes with a nice set of photos guiding you to the finished product" "Everyone has an imagination, it just might need a little workout. It doesn't mean you don't have the creative muscle, though it might need some exercise." "When the curtain rises, go hide and wait u til everybody leaves you.  Come out and play" "Hide until everybody goes home. Hide until everybody forgets about you. Hide until everybody dies" "Then no matter others' reaction, we have done our part. And we can keep going no matter what feedback we get." "It's worth alienating a few people to free up your creativity."

Reflective Blog post

Link to video: https://youtu.be/hC_5XFtp-Xs One easy thing for my group is to create the movements, as each of our topics is clear, so that we can all think of at least several movements for each topic. One of my members' emotions is love, and the simplest movement for this is to make a heart shape. The other member's one is shyness, and immediately we could think about sitting down with our faces down to the ground. Mine is power, and I could express this term by raising my hands up high. The movements are simple and easy to think of, but for me the most difficult thing is to connect them together into a performance: Love, shyness and power. These three topics are very different and it was challenging to add all of the emotions into one short play.  Previously, I tended to work alone, in which I could have control over all the things I work on, but now that I am not the only one responsible for the performance, it feels new and exciting. One very interesting thing is that this...

REFLECTION

The original walk gave me the most information, and a strong base/ topic that I need to follow along. The walk did not give me a clear idea about what I am going to create or what material I would use; however, it set the main theme for my final creation, the soul of nature. I came up with this theme as I saw a mask hanging on a tall tree, as if it is the actual face of the tree. It reminds me of “Mother Nature”, who tends to have a kind, forgiving soul and holds the responsibility to protect nature. I was also inspired by “The Enchanted Rose” in “Beauty and the Beast”, and the creative perspective from an artist named Claude Monet towards nature. Lantern was not my first choice for my final result, I was originally going to create a small green landscape 3D art on a hard cardboard, representing what I saw in the backfield. As this idea does not have a function, I think making a lantern would be a wiser choice.  The critiques I wrote for my classmates also helped me a lot t...
