Artist Statement:

 

Hi, I'm Flora. I’ve always thought of myself as a creative thinker, a designer, and I think everyone else does. 

 

Each individual has different views on “Creativity”. People look at the issue from a creative angle, and are inspired by things around them. I personally approach “creativity” and see it as a fundamental tool in life that enhances the thinking ability of an individual or a community working together on an issue or field. 

 

The main application of this subject is to help people to find solutions to difficult problems. 

 

This definition is reflected by a piece of art that I made. 

 

 

Exhibit Notes: 

 

The piece that I made was a golden, sparkling cape. I named it “Glow”, just like how it looks from my eyes. Cape has been very familiar to all ranges of age and it is everywhere. It appears in heroes' cartoons, movies. Even in the past, kings and queens appeared with their cape.

 

So, I would say it is a global symbol of strength. It also represents victory, brightness, and solutions, which connect to my point of view upon the term “Creativity”. 

 

I made it look golden, to make the visual more appealing and more powerful. 

I feel like most people could relate to the meaning of strength that the cape delivers, because who don't know about cape. 

 

Throughout the process of designing and making this piece, I learnt how to stay calm under pressure. This was because I did not have a lot of materials for such a big final project as an international boarder, but in the end I quickly solved the issue by calming the pressure down. 

I also learnt how to always be patient, and to work harder.

REFLECTION

  The original walk gave me the most information, and a strong base/ topic that I need to follow along. The walk did not give me a clear idea about what I am going to create or what material I would use; however, it set the main theme for my final creation, the soul of nature. I came up with this theme as I saw a mask hanging on a tall tree, as if it is the actual face of the tree. It reminds me of “Mother Nature”, who tends to have a kind, forgiving soul and holds the responsibility to protect nature. I was also inspired by “The Enchanted Rose” in “Beauty and the Beast”, and the creative perspective from an artist named Claude Monet towards nature. Lantern was not my first choice for my final result, I was originally going to create a small green landscape 3D art on a hard cardboard, representing what I saw in the backfield. Chefs & Fashionista

I think that the two chefs' inspirations are their experiences from traveling/ exploring nature and their passion as well. They travelled to different places and explore the nature, and the culture there, then bring their own experience, view, thoughts, and feelings to their dishes. In other words, I feel like the chefs want the customer to travel with them as they are eating.  I feel connected to Thom Browne as he is also inspired by the basic in life: SHAPES. He imagined the triangle, rectangle and circle as dresses and faces. From these basics shapes that everyone knows, he created such great clothes and styles, and I think he also encourages equality for both women and men as well.

The Dance of Freedom (Egg)

  For the first 3 stages, I roll my body around to a specific direction as if I'm trying to reach an end and fall down to the ground, so my shell can break. When the shell breaks, I slowly stand up, with my hands gently spread out as I escape my shell.
